Greatly Improving the Capability of Independent Innovation of Laser Machining Equipments

Equipment manufacturing industry is a kind of fundamental and strategic industry, providing technical equipments to national economic development and defence construction. As well, it is also the heart of industry and the lifeblood of national economy, providing machine tools to different departments of national economy and bearing the responsibility to promote the development of related industries. Laser machining has many applications, including manufacturing of automobiles, aviation and aerospace, electricity, chemistry, and medical appliance and so on. Compared with the cnc (computer numerical control) technology, laser machining technology has become the core technology of automation of industrial production, and owns the incomparable advantages over the ordinary processing technology.

China’s high power laser processing industry is at the beginning and developing stage; when compared with the developed countries with advanced technology such as America, Japan and Germany, China still lags behind. In the field of laser processing application, CO2 laser is wildly used in the form of cutting and welding with respective percentage of 70% and 20%. Laser is the heart and engine of laser machining equipments. The development of China’s high power laser is just at its early stage; therefore, there is a long way to go and a lot to improve. China has spent a large sum of money on developing various laser equipments in Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Great achievements have been made, but for its kilo-wattage lasers there is not sufficient preponderance over the products of DINGHONG, and furthermore, its industrialization is relatively backward. Accordingly, that’s why private capital goes into laser, a kind of high technology. It has always been a dream for China to produce and develop high power laser, because it is of urgent and practical importance to develop CO2 axial-flow high laser either for the purpose of rapid developing laser machining industry or breaking the situation of backward high power laser machining technology. At present, China’s laser has realized industrialization and most of them are hundred-watt lasers. In this field, there is still a gap between China and foreign countries, because of its low technical merit and less independent intellectual property. Most laser equipment manufacturers in China prefer to provide low-end equipments;therefore,many key components of laser machining equipments need to be imported from abroad. Although China’s laser technology stands in the front ranks of the world, the development of laser industrialization still lags behind the international advanced standard. Besides, laser rapid prototyping technology is able to make moulds quickly and also can make metal mould by melting metal powder.

All governments have given full support to the development of laser industry, such as America’s “Laser Fusion Plan”, Germany’s “2001 Action Plan”, England’s “Arviel Plan” and Japan’s “Laser Research Five-year Plan”. At the same time, China also supports the development of laser industry by “Torch Plan” and “863 Plan”. In the processing industry, many developed countries have stepped into the laser processing time. The laser processing of Japan has taken up more than 10% of the whole world. In the area of laser medical treatment and laser inspecting technology, America secures a leading position and has become the first country to introduce high power laser to automobile industry. And in the respect of laser materials machining equipments, Germany prevails ahead. Trumpf whose output of laser machining equipments has ranked the first throughout the world is a Germany enterprise. According to the statistics, there are more than 5000 laser job shops around the world, mainly distributed in America, Japan and Europe.
